I am interested in the space between the personal and the public - where an individual story becomes part of a larger one, and where something seemingly ordinary can reveal something much more complicated underneath.

I have always been drawn to the places where stories linger: in the margin of a page, in a childhood bedroom, in a remembered conversation, in a historical object, or in a question that refuses to go away.
I write poetry, creative nonfiction, literary criticism, dramatic writing, and journalism to explore memory, identity, literature, history, illness, and the ways people change while trying to remain themselves.
Journalism has taught me to look outward. It has given me a reason to ask questions, investigate what is happening around me, listen carefully to other people's experiences, and turn those experiences into something that can be understood by a larger community.
Creative writing has taught me to look inward. It allows me to explore the memories, questions, and contradictions that don't always have straightforward answers.
The two forms of writing are different, but they continually inform one another.
Drama has given me another way to explore those questions - through characters whose competing perspectives reveal what people sometimes cannot say directly about themselves.
